The incident took place near Panjim High Court infront of Panjim Residency. It was around 3.15pm when the witness was put to death by 3 goons from Chimbel. The Crime took place inspite of Police Vigilance in the nearby Court.  The witness was warned not to serve as witness for particular court case. This was the outcome of his presence. The assault was done  with swords, direct hit on head of said witness. Here the question arises how secure is the Town – Panjim itself for common people ???

PANAJI: In an apparent gang war, two chopper-wielding assailants left an alleged gangster and his cousin injured in the heart of Panaji on Thursday afternoon. Mehboob Shah Mulla, 31, alias Bichu, a known criminal, was on his way to the sessions court for the hearing of an attempt to murder case in which he is an accused when the attack took place.

After parking his car behind the Adil Shah Palace around 2.30pm, he was making his way to the court on foot and had reached Panaji Residency hotel when the two assailants emerged from the crowd and attacked him from behind with “koitas”, which the police said are normally used to cut fish. Bichu received about four to five cuts on his head and left palm. As he fell down, his cousin Ramzan Mulla, 27, intervened.

He, too, was then attacked. Ramzan was injured on his left hand. Both Bichu and Ramzan are from Chimbel and the latter has no criminal record. The attackers fled on a motorcycle, witnesses told the police, who reached the scene within 10 minutes. The police took the duo to the Goa Medical College hospital.

“When I spoke to Bichu at GMC, he claimed he didn’t know the attackers,” Panaji sub-divisional police officer Gajanan Prabhudessai told TOI. Police were unable to record Bichu’s statement as he was taken for surgery shortly afterwards. His condition was reported to be stable. His cousin was discharged after treatment. Goa police PRO A V Deshpande described Bichu as an “associate of Ashpak Bengre”, involved in the Bagira murder case.

The case for which Bichu was on his way to court pertains an attempt to murder one Joaquim Rebello from Altinho, Panaji, in July 2008. Bichu was chargesheeted but had received bail in the case. Deshpande said Rebello is “equally involved in gangkind of activity”.
