A Sanjay Gupta film means men in black, walking in unison, their faces obscured by the shades du jour, and the shot frozen in sepia tint. Acid Factory, though merely produced by Gupta, has all that and more. It has guns, of all sorts. It has bikes, and even a biker chick, gasp, gasp, Dia Mirza. And it has lots of cars being blown up. It also has a plot that is vaguely reminiscent of several Western films and a cast that comprises the leading lights of Bollywood’s C team. So the plot goes something like this: the police sets up an elaborate plot to net a gangster called Kaiser Ibrahim, no doubt a nod to one of the “inspirations” to the movie, The Usual Suspects, and several low life type of characters who wear lots of leather and gel and call each other “brother”. There’s Fardeen Khan, whose chinless face I find extremely distracting. There’s Manoj Bajpai, trying very hard to play the “joker in the pack” stereotype. There’s Dino Morea, as usual playing the fool; Danny Denzongpa, who really has to stop playing these shady gangster type roles that require him to look dignified while putting various people through torture (as in the ill fated Luck); Aftab Shivdasani, whose continued presence in Bollywood is a source of great puzzlement to me; and Dia Mirza who is clad in a backless leather body stocking and swings between smirking and shrieking. Ah yes, there’s Irrfan Khan too, no doubt thinking this was a movie that was going to add luster to his Hollywood career because it is a rip-off of not one but several Hollywood films, hmm?

This motley crew is stuck in an acid factory somewhere in South Africa, where there is a gas leak that has washed their memories temporarily clean (wish it would do the same to the viewer). There are lots of flashbacks which involve several writhing women in a club (another Gupta staple). If you want yet another reason not to watch the movie, remember it’s one of those where the movie opens with Gulshan Grover taking off his glasses and saying to Fardeen, I am ACP Ranbir Singh. I have a job for you. Yes, and I have an idea. Head for the nearest exit.

Suparn Verma is one of those directors who confuses style with substance. Just because you have a budget, I believe it was Rs 21 crore, it doesn’t mean it has to be spent blowing up every available car in South Africa.

“I loved playing my character in this film. It has many negative shades to it. He wakes up to find himself in an acid factory along with five other people who have lost their memories and don’t know who they or where they come from. It’s a very interesting plot. The role has given me the opportunity to explore myself as an actor and also to experiment with my looks,” says Dino.

Even though Dino had tough competetion from actors like Irrfan Khan, Fardeen Khan, Manoj Bajpai, Aftab Shivdasani and Dia Mirza, he thinks it was a smooth ride and it wasn’t too tough for him to get into the skin of the character. “The role was extremely challenging. I explore different shades of my character as the story unfolds. Infact, Manoj Bajpai complimented me saying that Dino is a surprise package. Coming from an actor of his calibre, I think it is commendable.”

Talking about his favourite scene in the flick, Dino says, “There is a scene where I and Aftab are bike racing. It’s a beautiful shot, probably the best in Indian cinema so far.”

What’s more? Dino will be seen in Acid Factory like never before, in a completely new look. “I grew my hair for the film. I am also sporting  a French beard. It’s a very stylish look. I think people would love it. I hope and pray that the film changes things for the better in my life,” says the actor.

Dino will also be seen making a special appearance in forthcoming film Pyaar Impossible and is soon to begin shooting for two new movies by next year. It seems the actor still has a lot of action in store for the audience!

While Sanjay Gupta’s Acid Factory first look launch was a rocking event for everyone, one actor from the film sulked at the party and that was Gulshan Grover.

Acid Factory is a multi starrer starring Manoj Bajpai, Irrfan Khan, Fardeen Khan, Aftab Shivdasani, Dino Morea and Dia Mirza apart from Gulshan Grover. Almost every single actor and crew member connected to the film was present there. When the event proceedings began, the emcees of the event actor Rohit Roy and singer Manasi Scott heaped loads of praises on all of them excluding Gulshan Grover who has a very significant role in the film as he plays the role of the uncle of the main leads. The Bollywood bad man known for being a thorough gentleman off screen was visibly upset over this. So when it was his time to speak he vented out his frustration in a sarcastic manner in front of the media and expressed his displeasure to Sanjay Gupta. Gulshan has worked in many Gupta films right from Aatish to Kaante and certainly the pain could be understood.
