South Goa Congress ticket undecided

Suspense continues in the Congress camp over the party candidate for the North and South Goa parliamentary constituencies even as the Congress election committee is scheduled to meet on Monday in New Delhi which may select candidates for the two seats.

While Public Works Development Minister, Churchill Alemao has been camping in the national capital along with his lawyer daughter Valanka to lobby hard for the South Goa ticket, sitting Congress parliamentarian Francisco Sardinha was set to reach Delhi late Sunday evening.

Alemao is believed to have called on most of the Congress election committee members in support of his daughter Valanka. He is believed to have insisted with the Congress  high command functionaries to honour the agreement the Congress had entered with him to nominate Valanka for South Goa at the time of Save Goa Front’s merger with the national party.

Sardinha, on the other hand, is hoping that the high command would not leave him in the lurch, not just because he is the sitting MP, but had also won the by-polls with a thumping majority. He, however, knows that a section of the party leadership in Goa is not behind him in the race for the ticket.

The third contender for the South Goa ticket, Power Minister, Alexio Sequeira made his public appearance in Fatorda this evening at a function organised by Pradesh Congress Committee General Secretary Vijay Sardessai to commemorate International Women’s Day. Sequeira appealed to the women participants to vote for the Congress candidate in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections, saying only the Congress can protect the interest of women in the country.
Sequeira’s presence assumes significance given that the function was attended by Congress bigwigs, including Chief Minister, Digambar Kamat, Home Minister Ravi Naik, Mahila chief Monica Dias and other leaders.
