Goa witnessed the season’s first pre-monsoon showers of moderate intensity Thursday night bringing much relief from the sweltering summer heat
Light to moderate rains are expected across Goa in the next 24 hours, said K V Singh, meteorologist in charge of the India Meteorological Observatory, at Altinho, Panaji.
Singh told that the rains across Goa are only pre-monsoon showers. “The monsoons advanced over the Andaman Sea on May 20 and will reach Kerala within the next two-three days. Goa normally gets monsoons one week after that but if the monsoon currents are strong, they may reach Goa within three days of reaching Kerala. By and large, the monsoons should reach Goa in the first week of June,” Singh said.
South Goa witnessed heavier rainfall than North Goa with Margao registering 31 mm rainfall compared to just 8.5 mm in Panaji and Pernem. Dabolim witnessed 22.9 mm rainfall, Sanguem registered 16.2 mm and Mormugao witnessed 17.2 mm rainfall. Rainfall of between 7.6 mm to 35.5 mm is considered moderate.
Singh said that so far no warnings have been issued to fishermen as presently wind speeds are not very high at sea. Only if the wind speeds exceed 40 km per hour, will warnings be issued to fishermen, Singh said. Meanwhile, following pre-monsoon showers that lashed Ponda city early Friday morning, a huge banyan tree came crashing down on three cars that were parked outside a house at Silvanagar. Ponda fire station officials said that the house, belonging to one Sunil Mathias, was also damaged causing a loss of Rs 80,000.
Though no road accidents were reported, frequent power cuts led to destruction of TV sets and other domestic electrical appliances.
In Canacona taluka, minor accidents were reported along the Margao-Karwar highway due to rain. The water level of the wells also swelled bringing relief to the locals who were facing shortage of water. Strong winds accompanied by rains disrupted power supply in Bicholim and Sattari. Pernem and Mandrem had to go without power supply since late Thursday night.
While power supply in Sattari and Mandrem was restored by Friday evening, Pernem had to go without electricity for two hours on Friday morning. The rains brought much-needed respite to the citizens of Vasco although the weather remained gloomy for the rest of the day.
