The All India Congress Committee general secretary in-charge of Youth Congress and National Students Union of India, Mr Rahul Gandhi would interact with the students of Goa University (GU) and affiliated colleges during his visit to the state on January 22.
Addressing a press conference, on Saturday afternoon, the national president of NSUI, Mr Hibi Eden said that the exclusive interaction between Mr Gandhi and the students would help the NSUI to forge a bond among the students and build a strong student force.
The national general secretary of NSUI, Ms Ragini Nayak, was also present along with others.
Mr Eden said that the visit of Mr Gandhi was non-political and that it has been arranged to enable the youth leader to understand the problems and issues of the students so as to find solutions to the problems by the students.
He said that the membership drive of the NSUI and subsequent elections would held within a month and that the drive would not affect the upcoming examinations.
He also said that the elections would be held on two days to be announced later.
Responding to a query on the issues of the students, the national president of NSUI said that since the NSUI unit in the state was defunct for some years and that it was being revived and that in absence of the unit the NSUI could not collect the information about the problems of the students in Goa.
He also said that problems in other states mostly were related to steep hike in self-financing college courses, which affected the student communities to a large extent.
He also said that some colleges did not have adequate infrastructure and teaching faculty.
Mr Eden said that free and fair elections to the students’ forum would bestow powers to the elected leaders and help them to strongly take up their causes with the college or university authorities and seek faster relief.
He also said that the students of fake universities would not be allowed to become members of the NSUI. As regards to sexual harassment and ragging, he said that NSUI has already taken step to eradicate the menace from the campuses of the colleges and universities, adding that self defence mechanism to help the girl students were already in place in some colleges.
