Monsoon Yet to Arrive in Goa

Light to moderate showers in some parts of the state accompanied by thunder claps brought relief from the sultry weather,But

meteorologists said these are pre-monsoon showers and it may take a couple of days for the south-west monsoon to arrive in Goa.

The thundershowers started after midnight in some places, but were more pronounced around noon and subsequently, the capital city experienced 5.4 mm of rainfall till 5.30pm on Monday. Other parts of the state too experienced moderate showers but, details were not available.

“These are only pre-monsoon showers,” K V Singh, director, weather observatory, Altinho.

Pointing out to the showers experienced about a week ago, he explained that these were part of the strong current (monsoon system) that had advanced over Kerala on May 23 and had progressed till Mangalore by May 25. However, its further movement was weakened by the disturbance in the Bay of Bengal. “It may take some time for the current to build up as effects of the disturbance are still there,” Singh said. He added that the monsoon normally breaks in Goa on June 7.

Meanwhile, light rainfall with thundershowers are likely to occur in parts of Goa during the next 24 hours.
