Panaji police on Friday cracked down on illegal agents operating outside the passport office and the RTO office in the
city. In all, the cops arrested six persons. While Ashok Gawas, 60, of Sanquelim, Ajay Mayekar, 36, of Socorro and Vinay Verlekar, 45, of Agassaim, were held for operating near the RTO office, in the other raid at Patto, police arrested Subhash Salkar, 50, of Goa Velha, Narayan Haldankar, 44, of Morjim and Joaquim Fernandes, 35, of Merces, for illegally operating outside the passport office.
All the accused used to approach people coming to the above said offices and offer their services to fill up forms. This was being done despite of help desks available at both offices, the police said.
Passport office employees said that these illegal agents were shunned away many times, but they kept returning. All six have been arrested under Section 34 of the Police Act. They will be produced before the court for further remand on Saturday.
