On the occasion of centenary celebrations, institute ‘Assistencia’ in Panjim has introduced Goa’s Centenary Assistance Scheme 2010 for helping needy people across the State.
Institution member Fernando Ribeiro said that the scheme aims to spread assistance programs to different villages of Goa, especially where its need is more significant.
“The scheme will help persons without distinction of religion, caste or creed,” he claimed.
He said that the services are extended to the poor and destitute aged individuals in difficult financial situation to meet their day requirements, to families whose bread-winners by reason of age or health or other issues are not able to meet the basic needs of those dependent on them and to the other needy sections of the society.
It also intends helping children who need financial assistance for their schooling.
The scheme has been put to operation in partnership of the Society of St Vincent de Paul at the grass root level with a Nodal Member from Assistencia to coordinate the implementation.
“This will cover more than 50 individuals/families in 12 villages in five talukas of Goa,” Ribeiro added.
The institution was started in December 16, 1910 at a public meeting in the city town hall of Panjim. It aimed at supporting financially destitute individuals/families, eliminating street begging by giving all required care including food, shelter and health care; and assistance to destitute/abandoned infants in terms of food, shelter and education.
