Goa government owes hospitals over Rs 430 lakh for mediclaim

The Goa government has a pending bill of Rs 430.68 lakh with 12 hospitals where patients avail of the government’s mediclaim facility.

Dues are pending with private hospitals both within and outside the state, it was revealed by the health minister in the assembly on Friday.

As on November 30, 2009, the highest amount pending is against Margao’s Apollo Victor hospital—Rs 173.90 lakhs. The hospital is recognized under Goa mediclaim for cardiac procedures and urological procedures, gastroenterology thoracic and vascular surgery, nephrology, laproscopic procedure and kidney dialysis.

Next in line is KLES hospital, Belgaum, where the pending amount is about Rs 125.35 lakh. In KLES, patients can undergo cardiovascular surgery, cardio-thoraic surgery, kidney transplantation, plastic surgery, radiotherapy, total replacement of joints and other major disease or illnesses including neurological disorders for which treatment facilities are not available in Goa Medical College and Hospital.

Mumbai’s Tata Memorial hospital, to which cancer patients go for treatment, has a pending bill of Rs 28.50 lakh.

At Wockhardt hospital, Bangalore, the amount due is Rs 25.25 lakh.

Among the hospitals in the state where dues are pending are Vrundavan hospital (Rs 15.50 lakh), Grace Cardiac Care (Rs 6.70 lakh), Goa Manipal Hospital (Rs 5.25 lakh), Vivus SMRC (Rs 31.50 lakh) and NUSI hospital (Rs 1.23 lakh).

The total number of hospitals in Goa covered under the mediclaim scheme is 12. Outside Goa, 13 hospitals honour the government’s credit scheme. In 2008-2009, the state government’s expenditure on treatment at private hospitals was Rs 11 crore plus. The previous year, the hospitalwise expenditure was about Rs 10 crore.

Incidentally, government’s hospital expenditure was highest at Apollo Victor hospital, Margao (Rs 3.76 crore plus) and then KLES hospital Belgaum (Rs 2.85 crore plus).

    The government must show that it has the stomach to fight corruption by naming these thieving politicians and ensuring that they are brought to justice. The money should then be confiscated and used to bring development to Goa.
    The government of Goa will not do anything since you cannot set a thief to catch a thief.
    Goans will have the opportunity to exercise their right to vote out these rogues at the next election. Get rid of the money launderers, the drug dealers. Otherwise goans will deserve a government of thieves and charlatans.

    So beware the Monserattes, the Alemaos, the kamats and the Naiks – your time is coming to an end
