Goa Police is staring at yet another embarrassment followed alleged rape involving its controversial Police Inspector Raju Raut Desai, attached to Canacona police station. The case which was kept under wraps for almost a month is now being investigated by Inspector General of Police Sanjay Singh, after Director General of Police Dr Aditya Arya took cognizance of the letter by National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
The shameful incident allegedly occurred a month ago when an Assamese woman, who is apparently related to a former police officer, was brought to Canacona police station for enquiry and later raped by PI Desai.Similar to the oral sex episode in Mapusa police station by a constable, in this incident too, Desai allegedly raped her inside the police station.
Sources stated that the girl, whose is yet to be known, was brought from Canacona market by police patrolling the area. The constables on duty later called PI Desai, who was at the police quarters. As per the complaint investigated by IGP, the woman was threatened with imprisonment during the investigation by PI Desai, who later raped her.
The situation turned worse as the woman went missing from the police station and is still untraceable. Police said that she is still missing.IGP’s enquiry will try to find out certain lose ends in the case. It was uncertain whether the girl was detained, arrested or rescued by the police. Moreover, there is no clarity on whether lady police constable was present when the statement was recorded and also whether NGO was called, which is mandatory as per the law.The things at Canacona police station, the southernmost tip of Goa, would have gone unnoticed, if not for the tip off given to NHRC by unknown source. The NHRC letter has triggered the enquiry.
Sources stated that Desai is now searching for the woman, who can save him from losing his job. DGP Arya even paid surprise visit to the police station on Wednesday to get first hand information.“When DGP arrived at the police station, PI was on patrolling duty. Desai was called to the police station and he arrived without uniform,” sources stated. The case has come at a wrong time for the department, which is fighting back to salvage its image from the series of sex scandals.
While enquiry into Mapusa police station incident has been ordered, in a similar incident a head constable was found guilty of indulging in oral sex from commercial sex victim in the police jeep.
The enquiry in that case has collapsed as the victim has disappeared. Going by the same logic, what will happen if the girl in Canacona incident is untraceable is anyone’s guess. To punish Desai, authorities will have to apply another yardstick.
