An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter Scale hit the north west regions of Guwahati in Assam on Monday at around 2.23 p.m, sending people running into the streets and cracking some buildings.
According to the initial reports Bhutan capital Thimphu was the epicentre of the quake.
There were no reports of casualties, but it was reported that several buildings in Guwahati had developed cracks due to the earthquake.
The US Geological Survey reported the 6.3-magnitude quake was cantered about 125 kilometres north of Guwahati and 180 kilometres east of Thimphu.
This is the fifth time an earthquake has hit the northeast region of India within a month’s time
Earlier, on September 4, northeastern India witnessed a moderate earthquake measuring 5.9,centered 96 km east-southeast of Imphal, Manipur.
The quake lasted for around 20 seconds; its after-shocks were felt for over two minutes.
