In what seems to be the first major haul of drugs at a railway station in Goa, nearly ten kilograms of charas was seized from three persons including an 80-year old man, soon after they alighted from the Tivim railway station Monday evening.

Ram Prasad (80), Rang Bahadar (38) and a 48-year old woman Dhani Kumari were carrying the consignment in three different bags, the police said.

It was due to the alertness of two policemen Sainath and Siddesh of the Konkan Railway police station that the drug trafficking was detected. Soon after the three persons alighted from the Mangala Express at around 6.30 pm at the Tivim railway station, Sainath and Siddesh found the trio moving suspiciously with some bags.

On being questioned, the three were taken unawares and checking of their bags showed that they were carrying drugs. The consignment was seized

from them before booking them under Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

SP (Konkan Railways Police) also visited the site soon after getting the information of the seizure.

Preliminary interrogation has revealed that they were to deliver the consignment to some persons at the Tivim railway station. Natives of Nepal, the three were in Delhi for five days before leaving for Goa with the drugs. The three who had travelled in the general compartment had boarded the train from Nizamuddin, New Delhi.

The charas was packed in polythene bags of different sizes while some sachets were concealed in plastic containers.

The police said the value of the seized charas is around Rs 10 lakh. PSI Hiru Kavlekar is investigating the case.
