Paediatric ICU now in GMC

Posted on 31 August 2009 by Lilac

Three years after first being proposed, Goa Medical College and Hospital got its first fully equipped and 12-bedded paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) .

The new PICU, with two isolation rooms for critical patients with infectious diseases, was inaugurated on Tuesday by health minister Vishwajeet Rane, who said, “The ICU will have five trained doctors to look after emergency paediatric cases and child care.     More doctors will also be trained and put on the job.” GMC’s head of paediatrics Dr Maria Silveira said the ICU will have a nurse for every two patients and a doctor for every three patients who will be on duty 24×7. Only doctors possessing an MBBS degree and with a diploma in child health will be posted at the PICU.

Besides this, the doctors will also have undergone a month’s training in paediatric intensive care at a medical college in Vellore. Sources said daily three to four of the children who come to GMC need ICU treatment. Besides this, on a monthly average two to three children in critical condition need to be put on a ventilator.

Until now, with no government hospital having a PICU, critically ill children were either admitted to the general ICU or shifted to a private hospital, said sources.

Mtv Roadies 7 – 7 Deadly Sins, 1 Wild Safari

Posted on 31 August 2009 by Phoenix

Roadies_7 copyFor six years, Raghu Ram has endeared himself to the audiences with his rude and humiliating comments on MTV’s reality adventure series ‘Roadies’, but it appears that the brain behind the show, might no longer be a part of its forthcoming season. ‘Raghu has been with the show for many years. People know the kind of reactions to expect from him but this time he is not really a part of the show. In fact, having said that, we haven’t yet revealed who will be interviewing the contestants. There’s a huge surprise lying there… So you never know.

It will blow your mind,’ MTV general manager Ashish Patil told IANS at the launch of the seventh season of the show here Saturday. The event featured host Rannvijay Singh, VJ Bani, creative director Vivek Bhushan alias Bumpy and Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan – but not Raghu. Asked about his absence from the event, as well as from the promotional clips of the show, Patil said: ‘Raghu isn’t really a part of the show this time. With every season, we try and do something different and surprise the audience, so this is just a part of it’. Till now, Raghu was known to be the creator of the show and so an integral part of it as well. In the last season, he had joined hands with his identical twin brother Rajiv Laxman to give double trouble to contestants, but had gradually chosen to reduce his presence on the show. However, it seems now, that he has completely withdrawn from it. But then, this should not come as a surprise as Raghu had hinted during the sixth season that he might no longer be at the helm of affairs. Said Patil: ‘There was one season where we had Gulshan Grover as the bad man, then we had Raghu Ram introduced in the interview rounds, then Raghu and Rajiv. So its just that now we are going to come up with something different and unpredictable.’ Entering its seventh year, ‘Roadies’ has not only proved to be one of the most popular annually-held shows on Indian television, but also the longest running reality show. This time, the ‘Roadies’ journey will kick start from the barren lands of Bhuj in Gujarat and will continue to Egypt, Kenya and Tanzania in Africa. The show will be at its ‘deadliest and wildest ever’ as hopeful contestants will have to pass through a seven round audition process, which will begin online through www.mtvindia.com/roadies. Irrfan Khan will be seen as a menace to contestants as he will throw open seven twists based on the seven sins – lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy and pride – during the show. ‘I’m going to be there to spoil their lives,’ he said. The show will go on air in September.

MTV Roadies 7 Ideas

How about shooting in hitherto unexplored areas such as African deserts? Mind you these are places where dangers are an integral part. Think Amazon forests? Or pyramids of Egypt? Or Gaza strips? (now you don’t gun me!) These can be amazing places to shoot for the Roadies season 7. Also MTV Roadies 7.0 can incorporate an ounce more of dare. Obviously, the mastermind behind Roadies, Raghu Ram would seek trade tips at least for the forthcoming MTV Roadies 7.

The MTV Roadies 7.0 Auditions Date will be announced soon…To register yourself log on to: http://www.mtvindia.com/roadies/faqs.php

Jackson death ruled as homicide

Posted on 30 August 2009 by Phoenix

Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson died from cardiac arrest in his rented home

Michael Jackson’s death was homicide, primarily caused by the powerful anaesthetic Propofol, the Los Angeles coroner has confirmed.

The singer suffered a cardiac arrest at his Los Angeles home in June, aged 50.

Propofol and the sedative Lorazepam were the “primary drugs responsible for Mr Jackson’s death”, but four further drugs were also found, the report said.

The coroner’s verdict increases the chances of criminal charges being brought against Jackson’s doctors.

Police have interviewed his personal physician Dr Conrad Murray but he has not been named as a suspect. He has strenuously denied any wrongdoing.

“The cause of death was established as acute Propofol intoxication,” a statement from the coroner said. Propofol is normally administered to patients having surgery in hospital.

WHAT IS PROPOFOL?
A powerful anaesthetic usually used before and during surgery
Can also be used in small doses to reduce stress or anxiety
Produced as a white, opaque fluid and administered intravenously
Marketed under the trade name Diprivan

“The manner of death has been ruled: Homicide,” it adds. In the US, homicide refers to the killing of one person by another and includes manslaughter and murder.

A cocktail of drugs – also including sedatives Midazolam and Diazepam, the painkiller Lidocaine and the stimulant Ephedrine – were detected in his body.

The full toxicology report remains sealed, at the request of the LA Police Department (LAPD) and the city’s district attorney.

California’s attorney general will now open an independent investigation into several doctors whose names have come up in connection with Jackson’s death.

YouTube shares more video profits

Posted on 30 August 2009 by Phoenix

A lucky video from the zoo could now net YouTube users thousan

Video-sharing website YouTube is to allow those who post popular videos to share in the profits they generate.

The site already shares ad revenue with the owners of copyright material that is frequently uploaded.

The new scheme aims to identify hugely popular videos from individuals, notifying them that they can become advertising partners.

The Partner Program will start in the US, and YouTube says it plans an international version soon.

Going viral

While a great deal of controversy and legal wrangling has surrounded the posting of copyright material such as movie clips on YouTube, the more prevalent phenomenon recently is the “viral video”.

Such videos are typically by individual users; the more entertaining among them get posted in many other places and as a result get a rapidly growing number of views.

A number of users who regularly post such hugely popular videos have already been approached for the partnering scheme, but YouTube’s aim now is to track the rising popularity of one-off viral videos.

For instance, Lauren Luke of northeast England began posting make-up tips on YouTube in 2007. She was approached to become an advertising partner and now the hobby has become her main source of income.

YouTube announced in a blog post titled “In the future, everyone will monetise their 15 minutes” that it would contact users who post videos that become hugely popular, offering them partnerships on single videos.

“These individual video partnerships recognise the role popular ‘one-off’ videos play on YouTube, and have helped many people earn thousands of dollars a month as their videos went viral and endured over time,” YouTube product manager Shenaz Zack said in the post.

“We’re excited to see how individual video partnerships will help even more people make money from their success on YouTube.”
